Today we spent the day at Cabezas de San Juan, a nature reserve on the north east corner of the island. Our tour guide, Alberto, showed us around the mangroves and told us about all the ecosystems in the reserve. Then we went to the top of the hill on the reserve to an old lighthouse that was turned into a museum/work area for the people who work on the reserve. There we learned about bioluminescent creatures who light up the water as they are moved and had a chance to touch some of the creatures living on the reserve. After lunch we worked with archaeologists by sorting rocks from different materials found on the reserve. After we were done on the reserve, we finished the day with a dip at the beach right next door. Back at the house we had a delicious meal of rice, sweet potato stew, and beef with onions, cooked by our guide Hector's wife. Afterwards we debriefed the day by talking about how the day affected us and what we were looking forward to for the next day.
