(Jackie): First Night - Relaxation, Reflection, Learning

After a yummy dinner of steak, mashed potatoes, veggie lasagna, and salad, our crew had an hour to kill. Many explored the beautiful retreat grounds or sat around and talked with each other. We spotted five cute, wild rabbits on the premise, along with countless lizards!

At 7pm, Scott began with a prayer and then led us in an open discussion/reflection about why we each individually decided to participate in this journey. Many had heard great things about previous mission trips and didn't want to miss out, while others knew that they wanted to expand their awareness about how others (especially those less fortunate) live. There was a general sense of positive anticipation for the week's activities, and an understanding and focus about why we are all here.

Following our reflection, Scott explained the specifics about what to expect tomorrow when we go to the Dorcas House, which is the orphanage in Tijuana. We discussed the logistics of crossing the border (we will take a bus to the border, then walk across and meet another bus that will take us to our destination), what to wear, how to interact with the children at the Dorcas House, what not to eat/drink, etc. Understanding this information heightened the anticipation and the reality of what kind of city/experience we will be embarking upon.

Following Scott's logistics lowdown, Reverend Mary shared with us her vast experience having worked with the many children and adults at the Dorcas House and immigration centers in past years. We learned about human trafficking, the struggles of deportation, the extremely lengthy time that it takes to acquire a U.S. citizenship (27 years), and the many hardships and experiences of people she has met. She also showed us, via a picture powerpoint presentation on her laptop, the terrible living conditions of those who live on or near the border. Many live in dumps, with shacks as their homes. It will certainly be eye-opening to see and meet some people (mostly children) of such different backgrounds and experiences. Our goal is to simply "love on them" as Scott says. We plan to do so tomorrow at the Dorcas House by playing at getting to know the kids.

Signing off for now.... Our day's experiences will be posted tomorrow evening. Until then, good night! :)
